My September

Zil looked at his watched as the numbers rolled and finally hit 12 o'clock.

"Okay John, you can sing it now."

"Happy Birthday, You're now one year much older! Happy Birthday, Your life is still not over!Happy Birthday, You did not accomplish much, but you didn't die this year I guess that's good enough!"

Zil didn't really remember the exact lyrics of the song John sang at that time. But it was pretty much depressing. That point of time, he was 2 decades old. Not exactly, he thought. A precise mathematician would agree that he would be 20 only at 8:32pm on that day. He heaved a heavy sighed as he got up from the asphalt. Yap and Su Yee exited Yap's residence and were prepared to board John's "Eleanor" - The weird name he gave his Gen2.

The cruise was also a bit depressing, as John played his usual country music which by all means was against Zil's nature.

"Zil, Happy Birthday." Su Yee said. Making him smile a little. How considerate of her to remember. A friend Dalia also called from Uniten, asking if she was the first to wish him happy birthday. "Sorry, a fat guy beat you to it. But don't worry, you're the first from Uniten."

They reached hartamas, desperately looking for parking in a place loaded with people. Typical for a Friday Night in the Industrial Cradle known as Kuala Lumpur. They double parked, without caring of the police patrol cars wandering about the place and sat in the favourite mamaks and he ordered his favourite. The Double Indomee with Fried Egg on top.

"Be sure to take two candles and stick it in there." He said but it seemed that the mamak that took his order didn't really get the catchline. In the end, he decided to take his own birthday candles - Malboro Lights. It also turned out handy as each time John tried to make a sarcastic comment, he would blow off the candles using John's arm.

As he lit the ciggarette, he thought about his friend Hamsa who had taken a trip to Port Dickson on an adventure of Alcohol and Chicks just a few hours before the stroke of midnight. The main objective of the mission was the canadian chick his friend was interested in. If his friend suceeded the mission, Zil would be able to call him a "Canadian Fucker" for the rest of his life. If he failed, there was always alcohol. The best friend of rejection. They shook hands, and gave each other the finger before they left. Leaving him to break the 'seal' of not smoking.

The dinner table was short. There was no LLs or Ach Tungs or simply Pretty Girls in scantily dressed peices of cloth that night which made him even more miserable. "This is Hartamas on a Friday night! Where is my Birthday Girl in my Birthday suit?" thought the perverted little bastard. He ranted throughout the dinner table about being 20 and that there were no women popping out from a birthday Indomee. At the same time, a fellow friend, Epul, SMSed him a happy birthday. He also invited him for a session of DotA for a birthday break. He sadly declined, as not only does he have an exam on the following day, he would have to get up soon for a community service.

The thought of doing community service on his birthday made his perception on his would-be day seem very bleak. No, he didn't break any law, he was doing it for his project for Islam II. Not that he can forget the facial expression on his mom's face when he told her. She came ask him if he broke any of the law she just read from the textbook. He answered he didn't. He knew his mom would have said that, but just wanted to see her reaction.

Eventually, the night was over and Zil returned to his home and picked up a plastic bag from John's car. One that he bought a few hours earlier. He left it conviniently beside his brother's PS2 and turned on his PC for yet another lifeless round of vRO. By right, he should have had enough of that game long ago when so many others left. But he stuck around because one of the fellas they helped dragged in was still into the game.

Till the time his brother came home and saw the mess all over the carpet. A bunch of CDs were littered all over while he was looking the Frozen Throne CD so that Yap could go home and play DotA himself. His brother, Halley then gaze upon the box.

"Okay, who's been playing the PS2?"

"Oh. I was looking for the Frozen Throne CD."

"Then what do you explain this PS2 bag?"

"Oh yeah that... Happy Birthday." Zil grinned.

Noone could understand the complexity between the relationship of Zil and his brother Halley. They both shared the same birthday and shared presents from the day he was born. And never before did Halley ever recieved a birthday present from his only younger brother. Leaving him stunned for words. Halley's most of the time expressionless face could not show what he was thinking at that moment. But Zil savoured the victory. His message finally got to his brother.

No matter what happen's Halley, you're still my bro.

The brother's relationship had been sour over the past year. But had lighten up a little after an incident where his PS2 was stolen. Some days later, Zil came home to find his room finally cleaned. By an annoymous sibling.

But that's another story.
And then I ran out of breath....
